VINYL COVER DESIGN

DESIGNER / SHERYN BALDAS
CLIENT / JASON NOBLE / PROCORO CANADA / SOCAN

OBJECTIVE

This project, music will set the emotional tone that is to be interpreted visually. To design an informative, interpretive, unified piece of communication for the musical score of 'Furiouser and Spuriouser' performed by Procoro Canada and composed by Jason Noble. Every visual decision, made in the process of designing a communication, has semantic consequences. The intention of this Design Thinkers project is to reinforce the importance of defining an emotional tone for a piece of visual communication design.

INTERPRETATION

Interpretation is often a subjective concept, my approach is to standardize the knowledge and 'feeling' into key phrases and words, to overall become a type driven cover as opposed to the medium of illustration. The composition is a chaos and cyclical driven piece that establishes a sense of story through the multitude layering of tone, voice, sound and reverberation. Redefining the boundaries of musical norms, pushing the notion of ‘feeling’ into something that is felt beyond the sound.

RESEARCH

The album cover for "Furiouser and Spuriouser" takes visual inspiration from the whimsical yet unsettling world of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, reimagined through Jason Noble's auditory exploration of tension and distortion. A central figure, drawn in a stylized, abstract form, is positioned at the heart of the cover, with fragmented shadows of their movements, symbolizing the compounding voices and sounds that echo throughout the music. blurring the lines between dream and nightmare. The typography of the album title, "Furiouser and Spuriouser," is warped and fluid, with letters that seem to stretch and bend, reflecting the album's themes of distortion and escalating tension. This cover design aims to capture the sense of confusion, surrealism, and rising unease that permeates both Carroll’s original work and Noble’s musical interpretation, inviting the listener to step into a world where reality unravels and tension builds with every passing moment.

PROJECT 3

This project aimed to bridge the skills of concept development, typographic and illustrative design. Alongside bringing the opportunity to interact with the client and gain insight and feedback on real-world experiences. My process involved an extensive amount of research, in-depth personal reflection of the music and pushing past the constraints of 'legibility' and 'readability' founded in Visual Communication Design. For an atypical score, I wanted to produce an atypical vinyl cover, and in my reflection of my successes, the concept proved to be strong and impactful. In listening to the score, I wanted listeners to revisit the vinyl design and find little details reappear within the work that they have not thought of before. Alongside it being an interactive and modular piece. As far as failures, the craftsmanship and producibility was definitely a challenge, having to communicate with the printing company to properly print to the sizes needed (as each part is reliant on the size of another). Overall, this project has detailed a strong foundation of concept producibility and presentation.

COURSE REFLECTION

Without a doubt this semester has become one of the most impactful and defining experiences that I have had the pleasure to experience. From the previous semester, it has been a pleasure to be entrusted with so much creative liberty and freedom when designing such personal projects. From logo design, guidelines and interpreting music to interactive website design, this course â€‹has brought a new perspective (and trust) in my own expertise and (honestly) building confidence in my own designs. It has definitely been a challenge to create a brand and identity from concept, and through the guidance of both Judy Armstrong and Hadis Asal Alizadeh, it became an enjoyable and gratifying process. There have definitely been struggles in terms of interoperation and application from concept to delivery, however it has only brought me more knowledge and understand in demystifying the process of design.

The understanding a strong foundational knowledge of visual communication design principles has fully changed my entire design process, creating meaning and bridging the undefined aspects of formal elements to create emotional and interactive experiences. Throughout this semester, it has brought me a taste into the diverse applications of design, and how I can move forward in this degree.
